Problem Gambling - Parents of Adult Gamblers

Sometimes the children with gambling problems are adults. We frequently hear from older parents whose sons or daughters -- who may be 30, 40, 50 years old, are addicted to gambling.

These gamblers are borrowing money from their elderly parents or living with them because they are broke financially. This can be very stressful for a parent or other older relatives.

Your adult children, greandchildren or nieces and nephews may put you under great pressure to bail them out of their debts. They may lie to you about expenses that they cannot meet e.g. car repairs which are really gambling debts. It is important that you ask for proof of their claimed debts e.g. invoice for car repair, notice for unpaid bill. When gamblers are desperate to gamble they sometimes behave in ways which are unethical because they need the high of gambling.

If your problem gambling relative becomes threatening or abusive verbally or emotionally or physically it is very important to speak to a family member, to your physician, or to call 911 if you fear for you safety.
